WALSTREET FIRESIDE CHAT
Private & National Brands Through the Lens of Your Consumer
Presented by Intrics
Year after year, private label continues to grow. The recent inflationary times have only further motivated consumers to trial private label items.
In 2023 US private label sales grew nearly 5% YOY and unit share hit a new record of nearly 21%. More than half of US retailers expect private label items to be their number one growth driver in 2024.
Within the industry everyone tends to bifurcate items as being either a private label or national brand item, but do consumers? Or to them are they all just brands?
As part of an end of summer study, RetailData took a deep dive into the condiments category to see how private and national brands compared. Across 10 leading grocery chains, we found that private brands were on average, priced 69.4% lower than the national brand equivalent.
When it comes to the mustard for your hot dog, the study observed pricing of comparable private and national brands from the national brand being 154.5% more expensive to being 5% less expensive.
Key takeaways for this fireside chat include:
- What factors stimulates the consumer to purchase private brands? What brings them back to re-purchase?
- Why would development of a brand, such as Walmart’s Bettergoods, be advantageous to the retailer?
- What is the most important factor or attribute of private brands for a retailer?
