Student Success Center Academic Advisor

Position Summary
The Academic Advisor will assist students in making decisions concerning personal educational goals leading to credential attainment.  The Advisor advises students concerning their academic plans and progress, academic schedule, choice of major, and future academic pathways.  The Advisor provides necessary referrals to services to improve student success and increase retention and completion. 
    
Essential Job Duties

  • Provide academic advising to students and assist them with enrollment to ensure they meet graduation requirements
  • Work closely with Admissions, Records, Financial Aid Cashier’s Office, Bookstore, and other relevant departments to meet the needs of students
  • Use appropriate methods and follow appropriate policies to advise special populations including athletes, students in campus housing, and probation/suspension students
  • Provide appropriate advisement regarding graduation requirements of all Crowder College certificates and associate degree programs
  • Maintain up-to-date information on degree requirements provided by Academic Affairs
  • Interpret diagnostic assessment results (i.e. standardized placement scores) for proper course placement and refer to other student services departments when necessary
  • Provide information, support and referral assistance to transfer students
  • Execute retention strategies to improve student success and increase student retention  
  • Assist students in understanding how to meet their full financial need, including FAFSA filing, meeting FAFSA deadlines, completing scholarship searches, locating community resources and working with the Cashier’s Offices to inform students and help them make sound financial decisions
  • Monitor mid-term academic progress and advise students on options to improve low grades
  • Utilize information in the Academic Alert System to support student success
  • Work with the Student Accessibility Office Coordinator to identify and address the needs of students with disabilities
  • Work with Student Success Center staff to document student progress and provide consistent communication between students and staff
  • Be highly visible and accessible to students, staff, and faculty
  • Maintain flexibility with work schedules which may require rotating evening shifts and some weekend work
  • Fulfill any other duties which job-related circumstances may demand 
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree in higher education, education, guidance and counseling, or closely related field 
  • Demonstrated experience working with college students and disadvantaged populations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement responsibilities effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, other professionals, staff, and the public. 
Preferred Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Master’s degree in any of the above related fields 
Information Technology Abilities
  • Ability to operate a personal computer within the Crowder College Network environment using the currently available Microsoft Windows operating system.
  • Ability to use E-mail and associated calendaring/scheduling applications.
  • Ability to perform basic word processing using MS Word.
  • Ability to perform basic spreadsheet functions using MS Excel.
  • Ability to use other computer programs as needed. 
Positions Supervised
  • Some advisors may supervise work-study students, student workers, tutors or test proctors 
Working Environment: 
  • Generally, indoors in a normal office environment with minimal exposure to temperature changes, noise, dust or chemicals. Travel between sites will be necessary.
  • Normal college working hours, with some evening and/or weekend work required from time to time.
  • A neat appearance and appropriate businesslike apparel are required.

Physical:
  • Generally sedentary work involving sitting most of the time but will involve outdoor mobility within the campus and various sites (even in inclement weather) engaging in physical activities such as walking (sometimes long distances) when helping with student activities.

  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
